This is similar to what got IBM into big trouble in the late 1980s with its price guarantees. Do you remember? They offered price guarantees without reserving well against it, then a lot of people called them on it in the next quarters, hitting earnings hard.

So many fun games have been played with the numbers, even by companies you wouldn't think needed to do that kind of stuff, like Big Blue.
