Just FYI on the virtue of government:
I'm taking an ROP class with my youngest daughter (not taking it for credit, but since all the participants are older males, even though it is supposed to be a class for high school students, the instructors suggested that the two moms, of the only two (female) high school students, stick around)- in waste water treatment.

Fascinating stuff- the NPDES

I really never had to deal much with this, but now, as I'm sitting in the class, we are learning the most interesting material. You can really see the logic behind the effluent laws- and believe me, businesses would completely disregard the public health, and the safety of water, if they could. There is still quite a lot of illegal dumping- via manholes, etc- but at least those people can be prosecuted when they endanger the public waterways. I'm also very keen on the OSHA laws which have made the workplace much safer for wastewater treatment workers. It used to be a very dangerous job- but OSHA has instituted confined space procedures, and lock out procedures that have saved many many lives. Your government at work, doing something that really needs doing, and doing it in a safe way.
