FN.T RESEARCH ALERT-Meridian, Franco started outperform NEW YORK, Dec 16 (Reuters) - Morgan Stanley Dean Witter said on Thursday it started coverage of Meridian Gold Inc.(NYSE:MDG - news), and Franco-Nevada Mining Corp. Ltd. (Toronto:FN.TO - news), two large gold mining companies, with an outperform rating. -- Further details were not immediately available. -- Meridian shares were up 3/16 at 6-1/16 on the New York Stock Exchange, while Franco-Nevada shares were down 20 Canadian cents to C$23.25 in midday Toronto Stock Exchange
