andrew, apples problem started 15 yrs plus ago by not letting others mfg the apples like IBm let others mfg the pc arch.
They didn't start letting others mfg'er til recently and now it's working against them.
Plus there design was to deliver as much power within the limitation
of a few parts so mfg'ing could be simple.
So, the apple wasn't powerful enough.
They were a classic cassse of not listening to what their customers wanted.
the only good part of their strategy was there intuative interface.
In that they excelled to the nth degree.
