I am sort of disappointed by your "sink or swim," "the poor be damned" response. I would have expected some discussion of the role of chairty and volutary orgainzations in civil society and how government welfare programs displace those kinds of efforts. Then we could have gotten into a debate, with citation to appropriate historical examples, over whether that approach works.

Sorry, but the "suffering is part of life" philosophy does not cut it in modern day America. Different people suffer for differennt reasons, some of which society has an obligation to address, if not redress.

I'm not saying we need socialism or "social engineering," whatever that is, but geez, show a little compassion for the less fortunate.
