Isn't it one way of stating the real life goal of the investor that he attempts to get the largest percent increase over the amount of his initial investment in the time period available to him?

Isn't that what the total % gain/loss figure on the SI portfolio gives?

Isn't all this talk about doing it another way just a deflection of the disagreements about investment style that the members of this board represent?

In THEORY a person could invest one way or another way, given rules such as those for this contest and win; but that ignores the market. When someone here says: So and so could win this way by buying 4 penny stocks and one large cap, they need to add: IF the market happens to favor that idea during this period.

So I say it doesn't matter -- rich man poor man (that is, he bought all large caps or all small caps), somebody needs to get back the biggest percent increase over the amount he starts with in this very short period. That is this contest.

Best Wishes!
