RE:"I thought the price spike itself would be the "morally right thing" to do from the perspective of liberals. It will help ween us off of oil, which in turn will send less of our money to the Middle East. People would be forced to conserve, and you'll have less of those "evil SUVs" on the road. Alternative energy sources would then be pursued and made more viable. And Mother Earth will thank us for dumping less (harmful) pollutants into the air."

Apparently there is another alternative.
I was watching the Discovery channel last night and they had a program on building a bridge accross the Bering sea from Russia to Alaska. It would be 55 miles long and have three decks. Top one for trucks and cars etc. The middle deck for 2 trains and the lower deck for a oil pipeline. The cars could only travel 4 months a year but the Pipeline would be open year round because it is protected like the train.

This basically would hook us up to the Russias oil fields and greatly decrease our dependency on middle east oil.

Trouble is, it would take a couple decades to build and cost 100 billion dollars. I wonder if tariffs and tolls could make that up.
