House passes stimulus bill By William L. Watts
The House passed a stripped-down economic stimulus bill designed to extend unemployment benefits by 13 weeks and provide some business tax breaks. The bill, which jettisoned GOP-backed corporate and personal income tax cuts opposed by Democrats, passed by a 417-3 margin. The Democratic-controlled Senate, which passed unemployment benefits extension earlier this year is expected to take up the measure soon. Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle, D-S.D., said he was encouraged by the measure but was witholding judgment until he had time to study the bill.
