Could someone explain this reasoning to me?

The press announcement about the stock split said "The principal reason for the stock split is to increase the number of options shares available to recruit and retain the Company's growing employee population." "The stock split not only gives the Company the additional shares that it needs, but also allows the Company to make grants to its employees at levels consistent with its historical grants."

Sorry, Erik. Nothing about making "shares afordable to their employees".

Is the reason given valid? Don't get me wrong. I love stock splits. But only for psychological reasons. While the split does increase the number of options shares available, it decreases their value, right? That shouldn't make any difference.

The last part, about "historical grants" might mean something like standard 100 share bonuses or something. I guess I should go read the anual report. But is that reason enough for a stock split?

Anyone have any thoughts on this subject? Could there be any unstated reason for the split?
