The decision was made to abandon the Marines on Wake Island, who were fighting a hard battle, because they lost radio contact with them. In fact, there was just a radio problem.

As a result, the several ships steaming for Wake Island were turned back and the battle was written off as a "lost cause". Luckily, the Marines, who finally surrendered, were not killed as had been other POWs at that time -- but they did serve at hard labor and many were lost after capture. I find it to be a repulsive example of the American military not considering the individuals involved. I don't think we would do it today...
