Cops scurry to bloody crime scenes

Cops usually expect the worst of the week's crime to commence Friday nights.

Not so yesterday.

Before many residents had even polished off breakfast, police were busy with seven incidents of death and violence.

As city officials continued debating ways to shrink skyrocketing violent crime, police were scrambling to the bloody crime scenes early yesterday of one homicide, a body found in the Delaware River, two stabbings and one shooting with two victims.

The homicide occurred at 4:22 a.m. in Olney.

A 64-year-old man was found shot once in the head on the first floor of his home on 5th Street near Roosevelt Boulevard, said Lt. Philip Riehl of the homicide unit.

The unidentified victim was declared dead at the scene at 4:36 a.m.

There was no sign of forced entry nor a report of a home invasion, Riehl said.

"He was the resident and the landlord for that property," Riehl said. "The motive is unclear at this time. We're looking at all avenues, from domestic to problems with tenants."

Less than four hours later, police pulled a body from the Delaware River near Pier 61, which is off Delaware Avenue near Beach Street in Fishtown.

The body, found at 8:08 a.m., was an unidentified white or Hispanic man, age 50-60, 5-foot-7, clad in a black shirt and black pants.

Detectives responded to several nonfatal incidents, including:

• A 38-year-old man was stabbed in the chest and was in critical condition at Temple University Hospital after being attacked at 12:26 a.m. in a home on Cambria Street near 13th, in North Philadelphia, police said. An arrest was made, but police released no further details.

• Two men were hurt in a 1:19 a.m. double shooting on Poplar Street near 39th in West Philadelphia. A man in his 20s was shot in the chest and taken by police to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in critical condition. A 26-year-old man suffered pellet wounds to his face and arms and was treated at the same hospital, police said. No arrests were made.

• A 39-year-old man was stabbed in the shoulder and arm at 9:38 a.m. on Park Avenue near Erie in North Philadelphia. He was taken to Temple University Hospital, where he was reported in critical but stable condition.

Anyone with information about the Olney shooting victim can contact police investigators at 215-686-3334, -3335 or -3336.
