Nokia To Hold Contest To Create New Svcs For Handsets

STOCKHOLM -- Finland's Nokia Corp. (NOK) is tapping the competitive instinct of developers through a contest to help it create new services for its most advanced handsets.

Nokia Monday said it is holding a contest to encourage developers to create new applications based on Java programming language and the Symbian operating system for its telephones.

Nokia, the world's largest manufacturer of mobile telephones, said the winning entries will be featured in an advertising campaign. They may also be distributed through its sales channels and demonstrated at its road shows next year. The applications will remain the property of the creator, Nokia added.

Nokia's move comes as the cellular phone industry is scrambling to develop games and other services for a new wave of handsets that will have color screens and operate at faster speeds than current models. The success of such efforts is critical for operators who are building costly new networks to support the advanced services.

Last week, Nokia unveiled its first telephone with a color screen, a built-in camera and the ability to exchange multimedia messages.
