To expand on your comments, CD-R doesn't depend on a decryption chip, but it does require a second laser to read the CD-R data. Apparently, the Toshiba drive doesn't have a second laser which allows it to read CD-R. Therefore, if you buy a non-Toshiba DVD drive which allows the reading of CD-R, you don't get the Toshiba decryption chip, and you have to come up with a different decryption solution, such as ZiVA.
