KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - President Clinton is not alone.
The United States is the world's most unfaithful nation with one in two Americans polled confessing to at least one infidelity, according to a global sex survey released Wednesday by Durex condoms.
The Americans were closely followed by the Russians and the British in the survey conducted among 10,000 sexually active adult men and women in 16 countries around the world.
The French emerged top of the ''best lover'' charts though they only take 16.1 minutes to perform.
Paris was voted the most romantic city in the world while Hong Kong and Thailand emerged the most conservative -- people waited the longest before having sex.
South Africa was the best place to lose your virginity with four out of 10 men and women saying it was better than they had expected.
Germans, on the other hand, were bitterly disappointed first time around.
''A huge amount of our rubber comes from Malaysia so we felt this was an appropriate place to launch the survey,'' said John Gray, regional manager of the London International Group, as he presented the findings.
It put out a serious message that sex education was vital to prevent pregnancies and stop diseases like AIDS. A global average of six in 10 knew someone who had an abortion.
Americans won top marks for taking 28.1 minutes over sex, excluding foreplay, according to the survey charts. In Thailand, it was all over in 10.4 minutes.
Australians, who won more gold medals than the rest of the 70 nations and territories combined at the just ended Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur, could only manage a bronze in the staying power stakes. They took 22.6 minutes to reach the podium, behind the United States and second-placed Canada.
The French just pipped the Americans in the frequency stakes. Americans make love 138 times a year, the French 141 times. In Hong Kong, it was down to 57.
But the survey warned: ''Americans may be the sexual athletes with most stamina, but you cannot guarantee they will stay on your team.''
In the sexual fidelity chart, one in two Americans admitted they had strayed at least once, while one in five admitted to being ''serial philanderers.''
Spain, Hong Kong and Poland were the three most faithful in the survey.
The French emerged with their honor intact as great Latin lovers and the survey said the staging and winning of the 1998 soccer World Cup clearly boosted libidos.
''Men were able to enjoy their two favorite pastimes while women were able to watch in close succession some of the fittest and most attractive sportsmen in the world,'' it concluded.
