NEW HAVEN ? Vion Pharmaceuticals has won a $750,000 Small Business Innovation and Research grant that will help the company enhance its cancer-fighting treatment. Vion, based in New Haven's Science Park, has come up with a novel approach for destroying cancerous tumors. Genetically altered salmonella bacteria ? which normally cause sickness ? are injected into the body. They find and penetrate tumors, then produce powerful cancer-fighting agents from inside. Trials done on laboratory mice showed the treatment, called "TAPET," completely destroyed tumors. Tests to determine how safe the treatment is for humans are now being done at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. The grant money from the National Institutes of Health will allow Vion scientists to experiment with arming their TAPET technology with different drugs and dosages to find effective combinations. The company had earlier received a $100,000 grant from the National Institutes of Health/National Cancer Institute in April 1998. "The additional funding from this generous grant will help broaden our TAPET program and greatly assist us in evaluating how we can improve TAPET's anti-tumor capabilities," said Vion President and Chief Executive Officer Alan Kessman.
