Any idea what the strength of the troops or garrison at DC was?

I'm not exactly sure, but keep in mind, the works surrounding DC by '63 were awesome and unprecedented.

They included redoubts that could enfilade adjoining redoubts, miles and miles and miles of concentric and connecting trenches, hundreds of bombproofs, the heaviest artillery outside of the Navy and a mind-boggling array of ordnance, arms and provisions.

A couple of divisions could defend the city from an entire army for weeks.
