The concept of "widespread" is relative to the population size. In the "founder effect" ,for example, it wouldn't take many copies to be widespread. If you refer to the population of all of that type of organism, then it is relative to the total population size. English is notoriously imprecise and it's easy to wind up with temporary usage of a word that is slightly different in meaning from the same word in a different context.
