GTE making bid for BBN
Looks to broaden services with new Internet, DSL offerings

The announcement of continued DSL trials bodes well
for GTE, which is determined to deliver a bulletproof
technology. But DSL equipment providers, including
Westell Inc. and Amati Communications Corp., are
suffering because GTE would not disclose a timeframe
to put DSL into production.

"They were expecting a contract," said Daniel Briere,
president of TeleChoice Inc., in Verona, N.J. "These
are ongoing trials, and it's unclear when [the service]
will be available."

GTE has been testing DSL for more than a year, but it
won't make it available until DSL works flawlessly. At
Duke, which has 30 people using DSL, there was a 15
percent failure rate. The lack of connection in these
cases were attributed to engineering limits including
grade of copper, said Dave Kirby, director of
TeleHealth at Duke University Medical Center.
