Consumer market MPEG-1 encoders made PC Expo debut as expected from AverMedia, Videonics and other accessory suppliers (TVD June 16 p16). All carry prices of $300-$400 and use MPEG-1 chipset from C-Cube. Devices enable consumers to take any form of video input and compress it to digital MPEG-1 file for capture on PC storage devices, either for archiving or for transmission via modem. Compressed digital video also could be stored on CD-Rs, in essence enabling home hobbyists or business users to make their own Video CDs for playback on compatible DVD decks. MPEG-2 encoders for consumers won't arrive for another year, when price of chipset is expected to fall, C-Cube Product Mgr. William Chien told us. He said company has cut price of MPEG-1 chip sold in volume to $35 from $75.
