There's a lot of skepticism about the recruiting of "these people".

Experience shows the madrassas take years of intense religious training, along with isolation from media and civilization.

The concept of running to some protest to recruit someone out on the street doesn't make much sense.

"Pssst! Join us, we really really really really hate Bush, and here's how you can help!"

"Huh? You mean tie explosives on and do what?"

It's a non-starter. The real concern is that setting up a strawman is a much too easy way for tyrannical gov't to suppress dissent without due process, as in Nixon's time and Russia still today. That's the reason for the Bill of Rights. Fine, go after anyone breaking an actual law, but have full disclosure of charges. I'm very concerned about new laws declaring everything terrorism, and allowing secret arrest, detention without charges, no lawyer, and potential threat of secret trial and sentence. Nothing chills dissent more than the knowledge that these elements of the police state exist and are being used.

Worse, the inevitable tie-in between "dissent" and "anti-Americanism" is being made, with great help from the GOP ads and Karl Rove's '04 strategy. Combined with the fact that the GOP controls all branches of gov't creates a fertile field for abuses waaay beyond what we saw in Nixon's time.
