Intel Names Jason Chen to Head Sales Worldwide; Mike Splinter Resigns to Become CEO of Applied Materials

April 30, 2003 16:11:00 (ET)

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Apr 30, 2003 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Intel Corporation announced today that Jason Chun Shen Chen has been named vice president and co-director, Sales and Marketing Group, responsible for all Intel sales operations worldwide. Chen replaces Michael R. Splinter, executive vice president, who is leaving Intel to become chief executive officer of Applied Materials Inc.

Chen, 41, most recently served as vice president, Sales and Marketing Group, and co-general manager, Asia-Pacific Operations. In this role, he was responsible for all sales, marketing and enabling of Intel products in the company's largest and fastest-growing sales region, which accounted for 38 percent of Intel's revenues in 2002.

Chen joined Intel in 1991 as Reseller Channel Manager for Taiwan. In 1993, he assumed responsibility for Intel's sales operations in the People's Republic of China, based in Beijing. Chen graduated from the Graduate School of Business Administration at the University of Missouri, Columbia, in 1988 and later held positions at International Business Machines Corporation.

"Jason Chen brings an understanding of global markets that will be a great asset to our worldwide sales efforts," said Intel CEO Craig Barrett. "He has overseen our Asia-Pacific region's explosive growth in areas such as mainland China, which is providing some of the greatest consumption of personal computer technology, and Taiwan, which provides some of the greatest production."

Pending approval by Intel's board of directors, Chen will be elected to a corporate vice president position.

Splinter is leaving Intel after an 18-year career in technology and manufacturing management, as well as in his worldwide sales role. "Mike has contributed substantially to Intel's strong manufacturing capability," Barrett said. "I am sure his skills will serve him well at chip equipment supplier Applied Materials."

Intel, the world's largest chip maker, is also a leading manufacturer of computer, networking and communications products. Additional information about Intel is available at www.intel.com/pressroom.
