Microsoft Offers New MSN Members $400 Voucher to Buy Computers
Redmond, Washington, June 29 (Bloomberg) -- Microsoft Corp., the world's largest software maker, is offering new subscribers that sign up for its MSN Internet access service a $400 gift certificate to buy a personal computer.
The offer is available through Staples Inc. stores and MicroCenter stores, an MSN customer service representative said. Consumers must sign up for MSN for three years as part of the promotion, according to a Staples salesman. MSN's ISP service costs $19 a month, or $684 over three years, he said.
Microsoft's MSN Internet service has struggled to gain new subscribers and catch up to America Online Inc., the world's largest online service with more than 17 million members. The special might prompt consumers who were interested in buying a computer to sign up for MSN when purchasing a machine.
The gift certificate can be used toward any computer that Staples carries in its stores, a Staples salesman said.
Framingham, Massachusetts-based Staples rose 3/4 to 29 5/16 in late trading while Redmond, Washington-based Microsoft rose 9/16 to 87 5/16.
