TOKYO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 25, 1997--DIRECTV JAPAN (DTVJ)
announced its plans to introduce "Interactive Data Service" as part
of its direct-to-home satellite service.
DTVJ partner Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd. (MEI), has
contracted to provide its DVX (digital video eXtension) technology
for "InteracTV," an interactive multimedia data service.
Exclusive applications of InteracTV, such as odds and
results-on-demand from racing channels, will be available through
DTVJ in 1998. InteracTV, an all-satellite interactive system, will
be available to subscribers automatically through DTVJ's set-top
box. No additional equipment is needed for this service.
DTVJ plans to make additional service available via InteracTV
including:
-- Product information from shopping channels
-- Ticket information and new release information from music
channels
-- News reports
-- Weather and traffic reference information
"InteracTV is one of the interactive data services that will allow
DTVJ to stand apart from our competition," said Gareth Chang,
chairman of DTVJ. "The various applications we are planning as part
of this system will give subscribers more program software and the
only service of its kind in Japan at this time."
DTVJ is tapping into the enormous resources of its partners to
create a line-up of attractive and eclectic video, audio and data
programming for Japanese consumers. It plans to launch its nearly
100-channel, direct-to-home service from DTVJ's state-of-the-art
digital broadcast center, Japan's most sophisticated facility.
DTVJ is a partnership among DIRECTV International Inc. (DTVI), a
unit of Hughes Electronics Corp.; Culture Convenience Club Co. Ltd.
(CCC); Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd. (MEI); Space
Communications Corp. (SCC); Mitsubishi Corp. (MC); Mitsubishi
Electric Co. Ltd. (MELCO); and Dai Nippon Printing Co. Ltd. (DNP).
