It would seem to me that as long as Alpha runs NT and is cost competitive, Compaq (if they throw support behind it) should be able to sell the hell out of it. If Merced is late, that's more bucks in Compaq's pocket. (And probably fewer bucks in my pocket since I also own Intel). However, once Merced is out, and other boxmakers can now sell servers comparable in power to Compaq/DEC Alpha, I don't know how much of a cost advantage Compaq will have in building a server with Alpha vs what they would be able to get a Merced for.
