Another couple of things to try...

Right click an unused place on the desktop and select Refresh.

Ctrl-Alt-Del and see if anything's running that shouldn't.

Right click an unused place on the desktop and toggle the View as a Web page choices.

Select a screen saver and wait until it starts. Wiggle the mouse and see if the screen gets cleaned up on restore.

System Configuration utility, Start-up tab. Make sure you approve of every entry.
