Another Stunning Gambling Study
Fri Mar 19 1999

A study released yesterday to the National Gambling Impact Study Commission intensified the debate between commission members on opposing sides of the legalization issue.

According to the study, more than 5 million Americans are pathological or problem gamblers, and another 15 million are at risk of developing a problem. Suspiciously, survey participants who said they gambled just once to relieve uncomfortable feelings were deemed "at risk." Bernard Horn, spokesman for the National Coalition Against alized Gambling, was "stunned" to read that 6.4% of casino patrons interviewed were pathological gamblers and 4.6% were problem gamblers. And indeed, what good is any study without stunning findings?

Frank J. Fahrenkopf, Jr., president of the American Gaming asociation, alleged that an earlier draft of the report was sensationalized to exaggerate the dangers of gambling. However, he conceded that the report "confirms that the economic and social benefits of gaming far outweigh the costs to society of pathological and problem gambling." Yahoo posts the Associated Press article.
