Mel's Calling
David Frum

If a drunken Mel Gibson did indeed call out, "Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world," then there can be only one possible place for a man who believes such things: as the next Secretary General of the United Nations.

Mel Gibson [Jonah Goldberg]
I've known more than my share of alcoholics and addicts. I understand that drunks say things when drunk they don't necessarily mean. I also know how conspiratorial some addicts can be. I think Gibson's apology was decent and probably sincere. But, even with all of those caveats, it's hard not to be very disappointed in the man and it's hard to take seriously the suggestion that he doesn't have some hang-ups about Jews. Even the most favorable interpretation of events possible — which would include a theory that he was never anti-Semitic until he was villified for making the Passion — still leaves Gibson looking like a man with some very sad demons. And, again, that's the most favorable interpretation possible.
