They called me because they had a three-page single-spaced list of problems, almost all "simple" things that they couldn't figure out. These are college-educated people of average intelligence

Q , I find that very surprising and would love a copy of that list. After reading your account it's obvious that they had the misfortune of received a system that was hacked around with or had bad configuration from their vendor. When I first introduced my parents (65+) to computers they had a similar type of question list but of course they had never used a computer before. After about 2-3 hours of explaining the basic concepts of a mouse, Win95 navigation, Word, Explorer and Outlook express they were off an running. After that all they had were basic questions that anyone new to computers and a host of new applications would have.

Also let me remind you that at least on Win95 there is a UI provided to manage the system. Under UNIX your computer illiterate friends wouldn't have stood a fighting chance; try explaining a command line and man pages too them.

Win95/98/NT comprise 80% of the world desktop ; 80% of approx 400 million units. This % alone should be enough to convince you that your wrong.

Cheers
James
