General Instrument Launches First Use Of DigiCipher II/MPEG-2 Digital Satellite Technology In The Philippines

SAN DIEGO, June 26 /PRNewswire/ -- General Instrument Corporation (NYSE:GIC), the world's leading supplier of high quality, end-to-end digital transmission systems, announced today that its NextLevel Satellite Data Networks Group has entered into a contract with Philippine-based uplink service provider Transpacific Broadcast Group International, Inc. (TBGI) to provide DigiCipher(R)II/MPEG-2 equipment for the first launch of such GI technology in the Philippines. The value of the agreement is more than $1 million.

This agreement will give TBGI the competitive advantage of having the most technically advanced facility of its kind in the Philippines.

TBGI provides satellite uplink services for IBC-13 and VTV Corporation. VTV Corporation has a working agreement with VHF broadcaster IBC-13 to provide programming for its primetime block which includes the highest rated program in the Philippines, the coverage of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) games. TBGI's agreement calls for GI to provide some 500 Integrated Receiver Decoders (IRDs) for use by IBC-13 and VTV Corporation's provincial and cable affiliates.

``We began using GI's single channel DigiCipher I system a year ago, and we were so pleased with the performance and capabilities of the technology during the year that we decided to upgrade to the multi-channel DigiCipher II/MPEG-2 system,'' said Ralph Roy, Operations Head for TGBI. ``GI's DigiCipher II system provides us with great video and audio transmission quality, very reliable security and flexibility, the very details our clients look for. GI's DigiCipher II system package is the best choice for our current and future needs here in the Philippines. It's an ideal system to build your facility around.''

``We are very happy to partner with TBGI in custom tailoring our DigiCipher II technology to meet their specific needs in the Philippines, '' said Colin Boyd, Vice President, International Sales, GI's NextLevel Satellite Data Networks Group. ``We had a very successful introduction and installation of DCI with TBGI and it was a logical and natural follow-on for them to choose the next generation DCII system. We couldn't be happier about this new installation.''

Upon completion this summer of its recently announced strategic restructuring, General Instrument Corporation will divide into three separate public companies that are leaders in distinct global growth markets. NextLevel Systems, Inc., comprised of the Broadband Networks Group, based in Hatboro, PA, the Satellite Data Networks Group, based in San Diego, CA and GI's Next Level Communications subsidiary, based in Rohnert Park, CA will emerge as a leading worldwide supplier of systems and components for high performance networks delivering video, voice and Internet/data services. CommScope, Inc. is the world's largest manufacturer of coaxial cable and a leading supplier of high-performance electronic cables. General Semiconductor, Inc. (currently Power Semiconductor) is a world leader in the sale of discrete semiconductors.
