In the case of grandfathered unlimited data, I understand that you are an exception. I can't imagine many people are having the same trouble as you, though.
The % of people on grandfathered unlimited data is small and dwindling (I'm one of them, as well), but the same issue is present for anyone not wishing to prepay as much as $600 extra (24 months x $25 for a consumer account) towards an upgrade. In other words, preservation of unlimited data isn't the only reason people want to stay off-contract. I've moved the non-grandfathered lines I control to off-contract where they are $25 cheaper per month ($15 versus $40 per line when sharing 10GB+ on VZW More Everything).

Fortunately, all you have to do to remain off contract is swap in your old SIM to your new phone obtained anywhere you'd like and you're good to go. If the cost of your new phone is less than the amount you're saving by avoiding the prepaid charges, then you're actually making money versus sticking with the old-style plan and using an upgrade "subsidy".
