ROME, June 26 (Reuters) - Italian unemployment was unchanged in April from January, holding steady at the lowest level since statistics agency ISTAT began its current method of calculating the figure almost a decade ago, ISAT said on Wednesday.

Italy's seasonally adjusted jobless rate was 9.1 percent in April, ISTAT said in its quarterly report on unemployment. The undadjusted rate was also unchanged at 9.2 percent.

In both April and January, the jobless rate hit its lowest level since ISTAT began its current calculating methods in January 1993. Unemployment fell for 11 consecutive quarters before levelling off in April.

The number of unemployed shrank 0.6 percent in April to 2.172 million people, while the number of employed inched up 0.2 percent to 21.786 million people.

ISTAT calculates the employment figures during one reference week each quarter.

The steady fall in unemployment, a trend which began in October 1998 when the rate stood at 11.9 percent, has helped Italy's average annual jobless rate fall below 10 percent for the first time in a decade.

In 2001 as a whole, the jobless rate stood at 9.5 percent, down from 10.6 percent in 2000 and a high of 11.8 percent in 1998.
