I remember when I was into BBS's...USR came out with high spped modems, though proprietary, before other vendors....ie their 9600 was called HST

The BBS sysops got special deals on modems (HST/v.32 "dual standards" were $199 as sysop deals, instead of $500 retail)...then the sysops advertised the USR brands...so users tended to buy USR to get high speeds initally.

Their upgrade paths has been rockier...the original HST was not upgradable...got lots of flack from users/sysops who needed to reinvest in v.32(14,400 modems)...then they had simple chip replacements for < $30...then they got software upgradable modems

The ADSL stuff does not appear to be an Egghead/CompUSA product, at least not yet
