Ya'know, there probably are more trees today than a hundred years ago. But the quality of these trees is poor. Think on all those twenty-year-old front lawn pines, and the struggling sidewalk maples. Tree; yup, checkmark.
I wonder how many more (or less) three-hundred-year-old trees there are today vs. a century ago.
Or howzabout: I wonder how the total poundage of heartwood (in the tree, not the deck) today compares to 1898.

I really look forward to vat-grown four-by-eights. A hundred years hence, they'll be cheap and good. Environmentally, I take hope that we're headed through the eye of the needle for, say, the next fifty years. Too bad that'll be Helen's fight.
