The problem is that those who are "swarming mad" don't make themselves convenient targets like the Nazis, gathering in one convenient country for us to bomb back to sticks and stones.

Indeed. That does make it difficult. Finishing them off would involve a monstruous level of collateral damage.

They will be swarming mad, but they probably would be mad no matter what we did. Better to make them swarming mad, and kill the ideologically committed that stick out their necks, than to go on in a slow burn in an untenable situation like before 9/11.

I think a reasonable person could argue that, but it's by no means a given.

Creative destruction.

I'm an advocate of creative destruction, but only in controlled environments, like organizations where I've pursued that approach. In uncontrolled environments it is at best reckless. If you're going to do it, you'd better have thought it out.

We're not looking for short-term results.

Maybe in the long term creative destruction will settle out well. OTOH, maybe in the long term growth, globalization, and prosperity would accomplish the same thing. Unfortunately, this doesn't lend itself to competing demonstration projects or time-warp do-overs.
