LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 29, 1999--
Sam J.W. Romeo, M.D., M.B.A., President and CEO to
Serve on e-Med Board
e-MedSoft.com (OTC BB:MDTK) today announced that University Affiliates IPA Medical Group has chosen e-MedSoft.com to exclusively serve University's vast and growing network of more than 2,500 physicians and 80,000 patients.
The parties have structured a detailed arrangement to last at least 10 years. University Affiliates IPA Medical Group, an affiliate of the USC School of Medicine, was the first accredited IPA in the nation, and remains the largest nonprofit accredited IPA in the United States.
Included among University's health plans are Blue Cross, BPS, Care First, CIGNA, Community Health Plan, Foundation Health Plan, Health Net, Maxicare and Universal Care. University Affiliates IPA Medical Group received the first-ever accreditation from the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC), the nation's leader in ambulatory health-care accreditation.
The arrangement -- which is subject to execution of final documentation -- is estimated by the company to represent another significant penetration by the company into the national health-care market. Upon full implementation, the deal is believed to be worth more than $100 million to e-MedSoft.com.
Sam J.W. Romeo, M.D., M.B.A. -- president and chief executive officer of University Affiliates -- has committed to serve on the company's board of directors. Dr. Romeo has more than 30 years of experience in the health-care field and is considered to be one of the nation's leaders in ambulatory health-care accreditation.
In addition to having held senior faculty positions at the USC School of Medicine, the Medical College of Wisconsin, and the St. Louis University School of Medicine, Dr. Romeo has also served as the medical director of several HMOs in California, Florida and New York, and is licensed to practice medicine in the states of California, Florida, Idaho, Missouri and Wisconsin.
Dr. Romeo received the prestigious Physician Executive of the Year Award given by the American College of Medical Practice Executives in October of 1998.
In a related transaction, e-MedSoft.com will acquire University Affiliate's proprietary SamSyn Integrated Information System, and e-MedSoft.com will immediately merge the SamSyn system into the company's 100% Pure Java architecture.
The SamSyn system was developed at a cost of more than $6 million by University Affiliates, and includes several sophisticated enhancements in the area of managed care enrollment and eligibility, authorization tracking, referral management system, capitation analysis, premium billing, benefit plan building, claims payment and reporting.
John F. Andrews, CEO of e-MedSoft.com, commented: "This is certainly one of the most exciting times for our young company. As our products and services have become accepted, we have remained confident that acceptance would place us in relationships with organizations as prestigious and forward looking as University Affiliates IPA Medical Group.
"Dr. Romeo has done an extraordinary job in reconstituting the solution to the nation's health-care crises by giving control and management back to physicians while heightening the standards which should be demanded in health care.
"The marriage with e-MedSoft.com will serve to enhance and boost these objectives, and we are extremely gratified that University Affiliates has chosen us to assist in their rapid expansion."
