<<<Everytime I hear USRX licencing from AWRE, I fall on the floor laughing.

Then just as I get up, I hear the words "ADSL Lite" and back down I go! >>>

Jim --

Can't you just see it? USRX will be marketing the X2DSL hybrid modem, 56K with DSL available "at your leisure," at the same time GTE will be advertising "lightning-fast ADSL hook-ups a phone-call away" --- no installation hassles, initial costs spread over several months, always-on internet connections included, world-class customer service. . .

I can't imagine anyone buying an analog modem once DSL starts appearing. Besides which, I don't think DSL modems will be retail products in 1998.

The best thing to come out of today's announcement --- besides the knowledge USR will be 6 to 10 months behind Amati on production --- is the affirmation of DMT by someone this big. As for Craig Mundie's endorsement, this is all part of the game. Whether it's doeable or not, I'm sure he'd like to see a ubiquitous retail DSL market.

Cheers!
