"...Warner officials believed they could
exploit the massive computing power that
the two divisions had between them and
tie in Cinesite.

Cinesite, which combined film footage of
the actors with 3-D and animated cell
images, has facilities to scan film, read it
into digital format and record the digital
images onto film. The company typically
receives its work on backup tape via
couriers, which can be a very
time-consuming task, especially on
projects such as "Space Jam" that
require close collaboration between
animation artists and compositors.

Luckily, Cinesite and Warner Animation
used the same ASX-1000 ATM
backbone switches from Fore Systems
Inc. to internally link their own
high-performance Silicon Graphics Inc.
Challenge servers. So officials decided
that connecting their systems to directly
transfer the digital images was worth a
shot. Both were using the same Ampex
Corp. DST tape backup systems, so
there was a backup if the link didn't work,
according to Aylsworth.

But because the deployment was one of
the first commercial uses of a wide-area
SONET OC-3 link and was untested, the
rollout was daunting...."
