"Ain't it great when something works like it's supposed to?"

it's almost as if we knew what we were doing...

on the subject of working like it's supposed to, a program i loaded 11 days ago has been earning its keep around here very nicely. that would be

StartupMonitor
mlin.net

so simple and yet so helpful. it has notified me each and every time i expected something to load on start up, and it has also alerted me twice when i was not expecting a program to load. therein lies the beauty of the program.

just now, when booting back into win2000 from win98se, startup monitor displayed a dialog (similar to the one seen in the above hyperlink) that told me that a program named SideStepDll0 had registered an executable to run at start up, and asked if i wanted to allow this change. my wife had loaded sidestep on this machine recently to check airline reservations and hotel accommodations. we haven't used the program in days, yet all of a sudden it registers an executable. no way would i know that without startup monitor, until after the fact, and then only if i went looking.

i've forgotten the other program that startup monitor flagged for registering an executable to run at start up, but i did not allow that either.

i tell ya, it's a neat little tool.

:)
