Workshop Teaches Wild Animal Tracking

Munising, December 4

The two day workshop showed many techniques.

Over the weekend, several people learned just what is takes to become a wildlife detective. The Timber Wolf Alliance held a two day workshop at the Holiday Inn Express in Munising on how to track wildlife.

Carnivore ecologist, Dr. Jim Halfpenny, instructed the class. He revealed how animals make tracks, how to identify tracks and how to interpret gate patterns.

Halfpenny said, "The purpose of this workshop is to teach people what's in the field, what they see in the field, what might be important and how do you document what might be important so you can share it with others."

He also showed them how to use a cyber tracker, which is a small pocket computer equipped with a G.P.S. system, designed to help take data in the field.
