Vixel Spearheads Management Interoperability For SANs; Vixel Delivers First Open SAN Software and Hardware
BOTHELL, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 13, 1999--Vixel Corporation (Nasdaq:VIXL) today announced that it is among the first companies to incorporate open management specifications for Storage Area Networks (SAN) within its Fibre Channel products. Vixel's line of interconnect products and management software fully comply with the Fibre Alliance management information base (MIB), including the recently announced SAN InSite 2.2 Management Software and the Vixel 2100 Zoning Managed Hub. When combined with its existing line of managed hubs, the Vixel 2000 and 2006, Vixel's products provide total management interoperability for the SAN interconnect.
Don Swatik, vice president of product management at EMC Corporation, which sponsors the Fibre Alliance, said, "Charter membership in the Fibre Alliance, matched with its early product support for the Fibre Alliance MIB, demonstrate Vixel's commitment to the development of open SAN management standards. As Vixel fully understands, its customers will be the real beneficiaries of the work of the Fibre Alliance.
The new MIB was developed cooperatively with the Fibre Alliance, of which Vixel is a charter member. It is the only widely accepted method for heterogeneous monitoring and control of SAN devices such as switches, hubs, servers and storage systems. The Fibre Alliance recently submitted the MIB draft to the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) as an open standards draft.
"The MIB represents a significant accomplishment for Vixel and the Fibre Alliance in the campaign for interoperability," said Arun Taneja, vice president, marketing, Vixel Corporation. "SAN InSite 2.2 and the Vixel 2100 clearly demonstrate Vixel's leadership and commitment to providing heterogeneous, comprehensive and intelligent management of all SAN components."
SAN InSite 2.2 is the first management software to support the Fibre Alliance MIB and provide comprehensive status, control, diagnostics and advanced capabilities for switches, hubs and transceivers from a single console. SAN InSite provides proactive control and monitoring of the SAN, enabling an entire SAN to operate more efficiently. Because Vixel provides all aspects of the interconnect, SAN InSite's advanced troubleshooting capabilities are also utilized by IT professionals and value added resellers (VAR) to decrease implementation issues and overall deployment time.
