When we talk about these centuries of torture and barbarian inhumanity, we must remember that it was the practice of their most revered Kings and Spiritual Leaders. Take David here. The words detail the picture quite thoroughly: Under SAWS, Under AXES, Under HARROWS--and burned alive in a huge KILN.

In the same book we have Yahweh promising David (as a punishment for killing somebody named Uriah) that he will take Dave's wives and have them raped by a neighbour which turns out to be King Dave's son, Absalom. So when such acts of cretin savagery are sanitized as Just and Good--what will the simple and obtuse minds do with it???
Humanity went through this evolutionary phase where they thought...but not very well. If they had been more like animals and their simple ideas had been just a bit more unstudied...none of these crafty tortures would have taken place.
