Two years ago, doctors diagnosed David Bernstein with skin cancer and prescribed chemotherapy to remove a grape-size tumor in his chest. Mr. Bernstein opted to supplement the chemotherapy by joining the clinical trial of an experimental drug called Genasense.

Six weeks after his first dose, he got remarkable news: The tumor had essentially disappeared. "It worked for me," says Mr. Bernstein, a fourth-grade teacher in Montgomery Township, N.J. "I'm living proof."....."
