The Linpack benchmarks hinted at does suggest that even an 800MHz Itanium does quite well in at least some circumstances. Of course, Linpack is single precision fp (IIRC), but hopefully the penalty isn't too great for double precision. Btw, with regards to AMD clusters, the University of Kentucky has a 64-node Athlon cluster (700MHz, 1 CPU/node): cnet.com (Look at the image of the setup in that link.. why the heck isn't the thing rack-mounted?)
