Microsoft billionaire Bill Gates is no longer the world's richest man, according to the Sunday Times Rich List.

Walmart tycoon heads 'world's richest' list

Gates has been over-taken by Robson Walton, the owner of supermarket chains WalMart and Asda, with a fortune worth £45.3 billion - £8 billion more than Gates.

The richest man in Britain is the Duke of Westminster whose £4.4 billion fortune from property in London has moved him up one place into top spot.

The Queen has seen her fortune rise by £25 million this year to £300 million. It lifts her up one place to 105th equal.

The richest businessmen in Europe also amassed their wealth through the supermarket industry.

Karl and Theo Albrecht, founders of Aldi, are worth £13.3 billion which puts them in ninth equal place in the world's richest top ten.

The Sunday Times is publishing the Rich List revealing the 1,000 richest people in Britain. It also publishes a list of the richest people in the world and the richest Britons living abroad.

The Duke of Westminster moves up from second place overtaking Hans Rausing's food packaging business which had been top of the list for the last two years.

Motor racing chief Bernie Ecclestone has increased his wealth by 50% and moves up from sixth to third place with £3 billion.

To earn a place in the top 1,000 in Britain you need to be worth more than £35 million. The number of British billionaires has dropped from 26 last year to 22 this year.
