Maybe we should never have had a trade embargo there either... FWIW, sanctions on Rhodesia contributed to a more robust manufacturing environment in that country. The later sanctions on S. Africa I'm less sure on, but sanctions do provide a country with a nice barrier against foreign goods. You can usually find some supplier for what you really need, and you can also find export buyers for attractive products you make. S. Africa had a pretty sophisticated weapons manufacturing base, largely IMO due to sanctions. Both Israel and Saddam IIRC where arms trading partners with S. Africa during those years. In the case of Rhodesia, the USA continued to purchase chrome during sanctions as well.
