Cumberland and Miramar will explode if they can get their permits in place. I want NGX but am worried about permitting issues. They need to fill a pristine lake with tailings to make Kemess N work. I just don't know.:

Nunavut's ready for mining boom time

VANCOUVER - Mineral exploration spending in Nunavut soared to $188 million last year from just $35 million in 1999, and spending this year should stay well north of $150 million, Nunavut Premier Paul Okalik told an aboriginal resource conference in Vancouver this week.

"Exploration investment is leading to shovels in the ground and soon we will see Nunavut diamonds and gold in the markets,' he said.

Vancouver-based Cumberland Resources' Meadowbank gold project near Baker Lake is on track to receive environmental approval, Okalik said. Production is slated to begin in mid-2008.

Vancouver-based Stornoway Ventures and its partners have been hunting for diamonds in the Melville Peninsula in eastern Nunavut.

Okalik also cited North Vancouver-based Miramar Mining's Hope Bay gold project on Nunavut's Arctic coast.

There are another dozen projects exploring for gold, silver, nickel, copper, iron ore and coloured gems that have reached various stages of development across Nunavut.

Firms are drawn by Nunavut's mineral horde and its light tax burden. It has Canada's lowest personal taxes. It has no sales or capital tax and its small business and corporate taxes are among the country's lowest, he said.
