Intel gets 250+ places in TOP500 supercomputer list

INTEL IS SAYING OVER HALF OF the 500 fastest supercomputers in the world are based on its Itanium or Xeon processors. My oh my, Intel, how well you're doing with your "one-of-a-kind supercomputers" and your "building-block" approach.
The TOP500 list, released by the University of Manheim, University of Tennessee, and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, reveals the top 500 supercomputer sites in the world. If you think back to yesterday, you might remember that AMD sent out a release gabbing about how well it was doing on the list. Funny coincidence, that.
According to the All-Seeing-I©, over 286 of the supercomputers in the "Top500" list are running on Intel platforms. Three years ago, Intel had but three systems on the list. Quite an improvement, I'd say.
Of the top ten spots in the TOP500 Intel holds four places, the highest ranking, at second in the list, is the "Thunder" system at the Department of Energy's Lawrence Livermore National Lab. Also on the list are the systems at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications, ranking fifth; the Institute of Physical and Chemical Research, ranking seventh; and the Pacific Northwest National Lab, ranking ninth. µ |
