Well, he was apparently estranged from his mother. Maybe she disconnected from him emotionally years ago. Although, as a parent, I cannot conceive of a way that I could ever be that emotionally disconnected from my son. Though I can say that I am certainly that disconnected from some of my step-siblings who I grew up with since I was 5yo.
