IC-design house plans Taiwan IPO
By Mark LaPedus
Taipei, Taiwan- A Hsinchu, Taiwan-based IC-design house, Silicon Integrated Systems Corp. (SIS), plans to file an initial public offering on the local stock exchange in the next few months. It is hoping to raise capital for new-product development in its core PC chip-set business and other areas.
SIS, one of Taiwan's largest IC-design houses, reported sales of nearly $150 million in 1995, up 58% from 1994.
The company recently rolled out three product lines, including a PC chip set, a multimedia chip, and a Fast Ethernet controller.
It has begun sampling the SiS 5602, a chip set designed to support Intel Corp.'s Pentium II processor line and the Slot 1 motherboard architecture. Supporting processor bus speeds of up to 66 MHz, the SiS 5602 is a single-chip solution that integrates several functions on the same device, including a VGA and keyboard controller, a real-time clock chip, and memory. Prices were not disclosed.
By year's end, SIS will ship the SiS 5601, a chip set that supports Pentium II processors and the emerging Accelerated Graphics Port (AGP) technology, said Stephen Chen, the company's director of corporate marketing.
In the multimedia IC arena, SIS has rolled out the SiS 6326. This chip combines several functions on the same device, including AGP, 2-D and 3-D graphics, MPEG-1 and MPEG-2, and video acceleration.
In the communications arena, SIS has introduced a Fast Ethernet controller, the SiS 7006. The two-chip solution includes a media access controller and a transceiver chip designed to support 10/100-Mbit/s networks.
