That timeline fits with my limited knowledge of the series.

My memory is that Lucas said in an interview his original vision in the early 70's was for a six episode series, not nine. Nine only became a possibility later when the success of the first three releases (4, 5, and 6) made that a viable and likely lucrative option.

I haven't read the links yet to see if they mention that fact, but that is what I recall.
